Polite racism

Whispers

between the words are the worst,

the softest sigh of insinuation;

Interesting’ tilted

from the tongue

like honey dripped

into Mithridates until

the worms squirmed free. Or

that slight edging away,

that leaning smile, eyes

scratched into the back of my throat,

and a sweetly chiselled sobriquet.
