when marriage doesn’t quite do what it says on the tin

and promises are made that wear quite thin

when partnership becomes a delusion

and escape a fantasy solution, you ask

why do we want it?

why do we want it?

when we look in the tin and fall right in

we want the same options

to make our vows, state our connection

we want respect and recognition, you see

that’s why we want it

that’s why we want it

when we’re deep in the tin and the lid’s jammed in

and label and contents give us hope for acclamation

we want to stand there with you in celebration

our public commitment to life, with all its complications
