Dean Yates was head of mental health and wellbeing strategy at Reuters, the world’s largest news provider, for nearly three years until January 2020. Prior to that, he was a journalist, bureau chief and senior editor at Reuters for 23 years until he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in early 2016. He was later told he had moral injury as well.
His postings included Baghdad, Jerusalem, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Hanoi and Singapore. He has been admitted three times to the Ward 17 psychiatric unit in Melbourne.
Currently, Dean is writing a book about the journey that he and his family have been on through trauma. It’s called Ward 17: The Key To Hope Lies Here. He is also writing a book on how to create a workplace where mental health is a top priority with Dr Sadhbh Joyce, co-founder of the RAW Mind Coach online resilience training programme.
