Right Now is looking for pitches or submissions on human rights issues in Australia. Specifically, we are looking for submissions that focus on the issue of Prisoners’ Rights.

We are interested in the stories of prisoners, detainees, their families and the people working with them. What conditions do convicted criminals, asylum seekers and the mentally ill face in prison? Why, and how, do people still die in custody? Should children be in prison? What difference does being Indigenous make? Or female, or homosexual? What rights do prisoners have when they are released from prison?

We publish a variety of forms including:

  • Interviews
  • Opinion pieces
  • Reviews
  • Creative writing
  • Investigative journalism
  • Multimedia

The pieces must be original, engaging and insightful and should appeal to and be understood by a broad range of readers. We would appreciate a brief but detailed pitch outlining ideas before a piece is sent to us. The deadline for submissions is 6 February 2012.

Articles and opinion pieces will be between 800-1,000 words, however for features or interviews up to 2000 words is acceptable, upon negotiation. For more information visit our site here http://rightnow.org.au/about/contribute/
