This broken boat

By Mark William Jackson

Why would I set my whole life afloat,

put all that I have in this broken boat?

Because this broken boat is my only hope,

all my chances in one desperate throw.

No house stands now where I once called home,

that land, my land is a field of bleached bones,

so I must float away from what was once mine,

risk everything left for the life of my child,

for the little one born of peaceful mind,

who clings to me like a memory from happier times.

Into this sea of tears I drop my hands

and push away from my beloved homeland,

I pray that we make it to kinder sands

that will love my child, as do I, a dead man.
