Right Now – Board Chair

Right Now Inc. is a not-for-profit, independent media organisation covering human rights issues in Australia to a worldwide audience.

Right Now is seeking a committed, passionate and hardworking Chair to enable the vision of the organisation. The Chair will work closely with other Board members, Secretary and the General Manager and Editor in Chief to advise and support, govern and oversee the strategic direction of Right Now and assist with the leadership and general promotion of the vision and values of the organisation.

Right Now is seeking someone with leadership skills across funding, legal & governance, ideally an understanding of editorial needs and human rights.

The core responsibilities of the Chair are as follows:

  • Organisational leadership and expertise
  • Oversight of risk management and legal responsibilities
  • Innovative thinking
  • Strong networks and knowledge of funding and partnerships
  • Support the development and delivery of Right Now’s strategic planning process
  • Build, nurture and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (funding sources and strategic partnerships)
  • Work with the GM to actively seek new funding opportunities
  • Formulation and oversight of operational and Board policies and procedures
  • Financial management and security, including adoption and oversight of the annual budget
  • Promotion of the organisation
  • Assistance with marketing, fundraising and development of public profile
  • Attendance at Right Now meetings, strategic planning sessions and the AGM

Please note that this is a voluntary position.

Selection Criteria
Essential

  • Demonstrate alignment with Right Now’s values, and have the drive to make a positive contribution to achieving the organisation’s vision and strategic objectives
  • Demonstrated understanding of the legal duties and ethical responsibilities undertaken by company directors
  • Ability and capacity to engage with key stakeholders to build partnerships and secure new funding opportunities
  • Ideally experience in areas such as business strategy, innovation, fundraising, marketing and/or media

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and networks in one or more of Right Now’s targeted social justice areas/pillars
  • Previous experience as a Board Director with a non-for-profit organisation
  • Experience in project delivery, impact measurement or social media/ communications
  • Have a background in the arts/media/human rights and access to the arts sector and other relevant networks (Corporate/Philanthropic/Government funders)
  • A valid National Police Clearance (issued within the last 3 years

Time Commitment:

  • We are looking for a Chair who will be actively engaged and involved in shaping the strategic direction of Right Now in accordance with our vision, values and objectives. This will require attendance at all board meetings (once every two months) as well as approximately 3-5 hours a week to carry out the necessary tasks.
  • The Board meetings are held online to accommodate members from around the continent. Annual planning days and Annual General Meetings are in-person in Melbourne, but accommodations can be made if the board member is based outside of Melbourne.
