WANT TO WRITE FOR RIGHT NOW MAGAZINE?
We’re looking for pitches on human rights issues in Australia.
We focus on the coverage of current issues through a variety of forms, including:
- Opinion and commentary
- Creative writing (short fiction, flash fiction, poetry, literary non-fiction)
- Reviews of events, books, music, exhibitions, conferences
- Case and legislation reports and updates
- Multimedia such as photography, artwork, and video, as well as audio, including spoken word
We want work published on Right Now to be original, engaging and insightful. It should appeal to a broad range of readers, from a range of different backgrounds, experiences and with varying knowledge of human rights. Publication of work previously published elsewhere will be considered on a case by case basis.
One of Right Now’s key aims is to make the ideas and language of human rights more accessible. With that in mind please avoid legal jargon and explain any legal concepts which may not be familiar to the general reader. Avoid footnotes. Please assume you are writing for a non-expert but interested readership.
CAN I SUBMIT AN UNSOLICITED CONTRIBUTION?
Yes. We’re happy to read and review work which conforms to these guidelines but you will get a quicker response if you send a brief pitch outlining your idea.
If this is the first time you have contributed to Right Now, please have a look around the site to make sure we’re the right media outlet for you and your work.
IS THERE ANYTHING RIGHT NOW DOESN’T PUBLISH?
There’s not a lot we aren’t open to. We publish all types of writing, and well as art and multimedia, as long as you can tell us how your work engages with human rights, expresses or argues something original or interesting, and contributes to the broader community discussion around human rights and social justice.
Right Now will not publish material that is untrue, seeks to defame or is discriminatory in any way.
We are open to articles critical of human rights, but they should be well argued and contribute something interesting and original to the debate.
HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT FOR A RESPONSE?
Between 1-2 weeks. Right Now is run by a small team of volunteers who all juggle various commitments and we’re not always able to respond immediately. If you haven’t heard from us in 2 weeks, feel free to remind us you submitted something!
Writing should be no more than 1000 words.
If you have an idea for a longer piece of work (more than 1,000 words) please speak to an editor.
For art and multimedia, please do not send us large images of your work in an email. If you have a website, send us that address and if we’re interested we’ll contact you for more details. If you prefer to send us images directly, please make sure they are no larger than 1MB and limit your email to no more than five images.
Right Now is a not-for-profit organisation, run by volunteers. We receive no ongoing funding at present which means, although we’d love to, we cannot pay contributors. But when you contribute to Right Now you do get the benefits of having your work and bio featured on our website. We will also promote your work to our ever-expanding audience through our Twitter and Facebook pages.
Copyright remains with the author. If you are interested in republishing any of the work published on our website, please get in touch with us: info [at] rightnow.org.au
